Parents Council Committees

Parents Council committees work throughout the year to support New Student & Family Programs. Many committees also gather during the bi-annual meetings to meet with University administrators in their respective area and discuss ways in which the Council can support the needs of the institution. Below is a description of the Parents Council’s current committees. Parents Council members are asked to get involved with at least one committee.

ADVOCACY

  • Articulates the position of the University on issues before external audiences and in particular, brings the perspective of parents to bear on those issues
  • Works closely with the Office of State Relations and Communications to formulate a consistent and cohesive message reflecting the parents’ perspective on legislative matters affecting the University
  • Provides updates during the fall and spring Parents Council meetings on matters before the NC General Assembly Provides the Office of State Relations and Communications with parent information on legislative contacts

MEMBERSHIP & RECRUITMENT

  • Creates a plan and strategies to welcome new families to the Parents Council in conjunction with the NSFP office
  • Assists in increasing the number of Summer Send-Offs
  • Reaches out to Carolina family members and involve them in the Carolina community
  • Encourages active family engagement in the life of the University
  • Shares the work of the Parents Council with the entire Carolina Parents Association
  • Works with the General Alumni Association and Development Office to identify potential new families for the Council

SAFETY & WELLNESS

  • Focuses on promoting and strengthening safety and wellness in the University community
  • Advocates for safety and wellness initiatives such as alcohol, drugs, mental health issues and risk management
  • Actively seeks to improve and disseminate information about student safety & wellness resources
  • Works to improve the resources available to students and parent/family members

STUDENT LIFE

  • Identifies and seeks solutions to issues confronting students that are not being addressed by other Parents Council Committees such as first generation college students, transfer assimilation, study abroad, undergraduate research, international students, etc.
  • Assists with solutions for other areas of concern noted by NSFP, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, and the Carolina Parents Association
  • Partners with the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life and Community Involvement

PARENT & FAMILY VOLUNTEERS

  • Works with NSFP and the Parents Council to plan, create, and organize  family volunteers to assist with related family programs, events and activities (which includes New Student & Family Orientation and Carolina Family Weekend)

UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMICS

  • Serves as a bridge between undergraduate families and the academic environment at UNC Chapel Hill by connecting with the Registrar’s Office, Academic Advising and Undergraduate Curricula
  • Identifies and seeks solutions to issues confronting students regarding undergraduate academics and other related areas
