First-Year Orientation Fees & Payments

New Student & Family Programs does not receive funds from the State or UNC Chapel Hill. New Student & Family Orientation operates on a self-sustained budget and must cover all related expenses for each participant.

Student: $220.00 – includes four meals, New Student Guide to Carolina, staffing, facility usage, parking, shuttles, and overnight student accommodations for one night in Cobb Residence Hall, a traditional corridor-style hall with single-gender shared bathroom facilities. If these accommodations do not meet your needs, please let us know as soon as possible. Linens, blankets, and towels are not provided in student rooms. 

Student early arrival/late departure fee: $22.50 per night – depending on travel arrangements, students may need to arrive the day prior to their New Student Orientation session or leave the day after. Early arrival/late departure is not available for August Orientation Reservations - students will move into their Fall Residence Hall/Granville Towers Housing Assignment. All sessions start at 9:00 a.m. on Day 1, and end at 4:00 p.m. on Day 2. No exceptions can be made to arrive late or leave early. **There are no extra housing charges during the August Orientation session.**

First guest over age 17: $112.00 – includes four meals, Carolina Family Handbook, staffing, facility usage, parking, and shuttles.

Each additional guest includes four meals, staffing, facility usage, parking, and shuttles.

  • Over age 17: $92.00
  • Ages 6-17: $50.00
  • Ages 5 and under: No fee

On-Campus, Overnight, Guest Housing: $69.00 – guests may choose to stay in on-campus housing in Joyner Residence Hall, a traditional corridor-style hall with single-gender shared bathroom facilities, during their Family Orientation session. This fee is in addition to the Guest Orientation Reservation Fee. **There is NO guest housing available during the August Orientation session.**

All guest rooms comes suppled with two single beds, sheets, a pillow, and a towel.

Guest early arrival/late departure, overnight on-campus housing: $69.00 per night – depending on travel arrangements, family members may need to arrive the day prior to their Family Orientation session or leave the day after. Early arrival/late departure is not available for August Orientation Reservations.

Reservation Deadlines and Late Reservation Fees

In order to ensure a successful program for all of our participants, participation numbers are confirmed wih Housing, Campus Dining, Parking & Transportation, shuttle services, Academic Advising and other campus partners well in advance and changing the guaranteed numbers can impact program fees. All sessions are on a first-come, first-served basis. All sessions start at 9:00 a.m. on Day 1, and end at 4:00 p.m. on Day 2. No exceptions can be made to arrive late or leave early.

If you make your New Student & Family Orientation Reservation after Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 11:59 p.m., EST, a late reservation fee of $50.00 will be charged. 

Reservation Changes

Changes are able to be self-made to your New Student & Family Orientation Reservation until Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 11:59 p.m., EST.  After the May 18 deadline, you will need to call the office to make any changes and a $25.00 change fee will be added to your reservation.

Please note that changes can only be requested to add guests, add early arrival rooms, add late departure rooms, add guest housing, and request different session dates. No refunds are issued for guests who are unable to attend New Student & Family Orientation or for removing early arrival, late departure rooms, or guest housing. All sessions are on a first-come, first-served basis. All sessions start at 9:00 a.m. on Day 1, and end at 4:00 p.m. on Day 2. No exceptions can be made to arrive late or leave early.

Payment Process

New Student & Family Orientation payments can be accepted by debit or credit card (Visa or MasterCard), or check or money order.

Paying by Visa or MasterCard

If you are paying by Visa or MasterCard, please have the card number, expiration date, CVV code and name and billing address associated with the card readily available at the time you complete your Orientation Reservation.  

Paying by Check or Money Order

Please note that checks and money orders must be received within 10 calendar days of completing your Orientation Reservation or your Orientation Reservation will automatically be canceled and removed from the reservation system. If you are paying by check or money order, please make your check payable to UNC-Chapel Hill, be sure to include your PID in the memo line, and send it with a copy of your confirmation page after completing your Orientation Reservation to:

If your payment is not received within 10 calendar days, your reservation will be automatically removed from the reservation system, and you will have to resubmit your Orientation reservation. Completing a new Orientation reservation may require you to make a reservation for a different session date, if the date you originally reserved has reached capacity. Orientation reservations are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Payment Plan

Financial constraints will not prohibit you from attending New Student Orientation. New Student & Family Programs offers deferred payment plans. To request enrollment in a payment plan, please contact us.
