Welcome to Carolina! New Student & Family Programs is excited to support you and your family as you begin your journey at UNC‑Chapel Hill. Engaging fully in New Student Orientation is an important part of preparing for life at Carolina. All new first‑year and transfer students are required to attend.
Complete these steps first, to register for Orientation:
- Enroll in MyCarolina and pay your enrollment deposit*
- Create your UNC username (ONYEN)
- Create your UNC email address
*Your enrollment deposit takes 3-5 business days to process. Your ONYEN and UNC email address takes up to 24 hours to process. Once these steps are completed and processed, then you can access the Orientation registration site.

- learn how to complete course registration from academic advisors.
- connect with faculty and current students, including your Orientation Leader (OL).
- learn what it means to be a Tar Heel.
- discover the Carolina traditions that make UNC the brightest star of all.
New Student Orientation also offers a number of opportunities for family members. During our concurrent Family Orientation, participants will hear from numerous university administrators, faculty members, and current students about how to partner with the University to support your success and learning.
Attending Family Orientation provides family members the opportunity to…
- learn how to support your Carolina student to be successful.
- gain insight about campus resources and services.
- discover how to become involved as a Carolina family.
- meet faculty, administrators, staff and current students.
We welcome and strongly encourage family members and guests to attend Family Orientation and learn about how to get involved at Carolina as a family member. Students must add their famiy, parents, and guests for Family Orientation when they complete their New Student Orientation reservation. Guests can be added later, by May 15, without incurring a late or change fee. We look forward to meeting you at New Student & Family Orientation!
